About Beacon Insurance

You may know Beacon insurance by its original name, ValueOptions or its full name Beacon Health Options. While providing health insurance, Beacon primarily works to provide treatment and additional coverage for behavioral health and mental health needs.
In 2020, Beacon became a member of the Anthem Inc. insurance network to provide coverage in all 50 states. As of this year, Beacon covers around 40 million people and partners with around 65 different insurance providers and plans.

Understanding the Basics of Your Insurance Plan

Addiction treatment can be intimidating, but your insurance policy shouldn’t be. The first step to confidently navigating treatment is understanding your insurance options.

Key Insurance Terms to Know

  • Deductible: This is the amount you will have to pay out of your pocket each year before insurance begins to cover. Usually, these reset yearly.
  • Copayment: Your copay is often the set amount of money you will have to pay for a specific purpose. For example, you may have a $30 primary care copay, meaning you will pay $30 every time you go and visit your primary care doctor.
  • Premium: This is the monthly cost of your insurance plan that you pay for. Generally, the higher the premium, the lower the deductible and out-of-pocket costs.
  • Coinsurance: This is usually the percentage you’ll pay out of pocket compared to what insurance will cover.

Beacon Insurance Plans

Depending on the level of coverage provided to you by Beacon insurance, you likely have one of these common Beacon plans. Beacon offers plan structures similar to many large insurance providers.

Types of Beacon Insurance Provider Plans

Beacon HMO Plan Level

The Beacon Health Maintenance Organization plan is the most cost-effective for those needing inexpensive health insurance options. One drawback to this plan is that while it has low premiums, the deductibles are much higher, and you may have limits on which treatment providers you can see. Additionally, you may be required to get referrals from a PCP to see additional providers.

Beacon POS Plan Level

The Beacon Point of Service plan is one step up from the Beacon HMO option. This plan will offer a lower deductible with slightly higher monthly premiums than the HMO plan. However, with this plan, you may be given additional out-of-network options. This may allow you to see healthcare providers outside your network, with or without a referral from a PCP. Out-of-network services may have an additional charge.

Beacon PPO Plan Level

One of the most commonly held plans is the Beacon Preferred Provider Organization plan. This plan will have a much lower deductible than the first two and will have higher monthly premiums. However, with this plan, you will have the freedom to choose between in-network and out-of-network services, which may still have an additional fee. You will not need referrals from a PCP to get additional treatment in this plan.

Beacon EPO Plan Level

The Beacon Exclusive Provider Organization plan is the highest monthly cost of all available Beacon plans. However, you will likely have little to no deductible that must be met before insurance begins to cover treatment.

Additionally, you will be free to choose between in-network and out-of-network services with no referral.

ACA and Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Originally, insurance companies could charge additional premiums or deny coverage if you had pre-existing or severe conditions. However, after passing the Affordable Care Act in 2014, insurance providers are no longer allowed to deny coverage or charge extra for pre-existing conditions.
Due to the extensive substance abuse and mental health services needed for addiction treatment, a health insurance provider is required to classify substance abuse as a pre-existing condition.

ACA and Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Generally, Beacon drug rehab coverage or alcohol rehab coverage will include some combination of the following treatment options:
  • Detoxification services, including medication-assisted treatment and medication management
  • Inpatient treatment or residential treatment
  • Transitional programs like partial hospitalization programs
  • Outpatient rehab or intensive outpatient program
  • Sober living and other continuing care options for post-discharge
  • Dual diagnosis treatment for mental illness or secondary mental health disorders in addition to substance abuse
However, you will need to check in with Beacon regarding your specific insurance plan to see what is covered and available.
